Types of headsets

Headphones are classified according to the type of their drive (transducer) and how they are worn.

Moving coil

Moving coil headphones are the most common and common headphones. Its driving unit is basically a small moving coil speaker, driven by a ring drive in a permanent magnet field to vibrate the diaphragm.

Moving coil earphones are more efficient, and most can be driven by the earphones on the stereo, and reliable and durable.

Such as magnetic type

Similar to the reduced plane speaker, the magnetic earphones are embedded in a thin, thin diaphragm, like a printed circuit board, to distribute the driving force evenly. The magnets are concentrated on one or both sides of the diaphragm, which vibrates in the magnetic field formed by it. The earphone diaphragm is not as light as the static earphone diaphragm, but it has the same large vibration area and similar sound quality. It is not as efficient as the moving coil headphone and is not easy to drive.


Static headphones have a light and thin diaphragm, which is polarized by high dc voltage, and the electricity required for polarization is converted from alternating current, which also has battery power. The diaphragm is suspended in a static field formed by two fixed metal plates (stator). When the audio signal is loaded onto the stator, the static field changes and drives the vibration of the diaphragm. The single stator can also be used to drive the diaphragm, but the two-stator's push-pull form is less distorted. Static earphones must use special amplifiers to convert the audio signal into hundreds of volts of voltage, and a transformer connected to the output of a power amplifier can also drive electrostatic headphones. Static headphones are expensive, not easy to drive, and the sound pressure level can be reached without moving coil headphones, but it is fast, capable of replaying all kinds of tiny details, and the distortion is extremely low.


The dipole earphone is also called the stationary static headset, which is either polarized or is polarized by the electrostatic field emitted by the external polarizing material of the diaphragm. It does not require the specialized equipment to provide the polarization voltage. The dipole earphone has the characteristics of most static earphones, but the resident experience gradually depolarization and needs to be replaced, which can last about 5-10 years.

Wireless headphones and cordless headphones

They consist of two parts, a signal transmitter and a headset with a signal reception and amplification device (usually moving coil type). The transmitter is connected to the signal source, and can be used to improve the sound quality and adjust the sound quality before the transmitter can be connected to a pre-stage or headphone amplifier.

Wireless earphones are generally referred to as the headphone system with infrared transmission signals. Cordless earphones refer to the headphone system that USES radio waves to transmit signals. The working frequency of infrared headphone is from several KHz to several MHz, effective distance is about 10 meters, earphone should be in visual range; The radio headphone work frequency is VHF 130MHz-200 MHz, UHF 450 MHz- 900MHz.
